  • 2:30-3:00 PM: Check-in & Networking

  • 3:00-4:00 PM: "CMU Embodied Carbon: Understanding Impacts Through LCA" - Tino Kalayil, Concrete Masonry Checkoff

    • We will learn how block can achieve style, savings, sustainability, safety and resiliency. We will also review where the concrete masonry industry stands in the market, where it needs to be to continue the growth within the industry, and how to capitalize on the public assistance, support and resources can help design more efficient buildings.

  • 4:00-5:00 PM: "Locating Movement Joints from a Structural Engineer's Perspective" - Sam Rubenzer, FORSE Consulting

    • This program provides a structural engineering approach to the placement of movement joints in masonry design. Participants will examine how factors such as thermal expansion, shrinkage, loading conditions, and structural restraint impact joint location and detailing. The session emphasizes strategies to mitigate cracking, enhance serviceability, and align masonry performance with structural intent.

  • 5:00-5:30 PM: Networking

Course Overview:
We will learn how block can achieve style, savings, sustainability, safety and resiliency. We will also review where the concrete masonry industry stands in the market, where it needs to be to continue the growth within the industry, and how to capitalize on the public assistance, support and resources can help design more efficient buildings.

This presentation provides the misconceptions with concrete masonry and clarifies it with the true capabilities of concrete masonry. It discusses the current state of concrete masonry and the role that Checkoff's play in the industry. It introduces the style, sustainability, durability and strength benefits of CMU while also discussing the innovation opportunities for the concrete masonry industry. The importance of resilience is discussed in the presentation and concrete masonry's resilient behavior to keep the community safer to natural disasters.

1. Explore the aesthetic versatility of concrete masonry units in various design styles.
2. Review CMU misconceptions and strategies for combating them with the versatility of
CMU.
