Presenting Excellence in Masonry
Balanced Design 2010 Awards
Best of Show
West Allis Animal Hospital
Collaborative efforts and a diverse mix of masonry units help the West Allis Animal Hospital create the foundation for an elegant addition to an aged area of the city’s downtown district. 7,000 units of Heritage Collection Concrete Brick compliment the clay bricks. An additional 4,000 units of Western Sand-colored concrete masonry units were used to create a warm feeling and transition away from the traditional institutional fee. Inside the animal boarding areas, the designer chose 375 units of Acoustical dampening SoundCell® masonry units. These noise-absorbing units help quite the rooms, making the pets’ and visitors’ stay more tranquil.
Excellence
All Saints Catholic Church
All Saints Catholic Church serves approximately 900 Catholic families in New Berlin and the surrounding area. This building represents the combined effort of three Catholic parishes, which have joined together to form one unified parish and have relocated to this facility. The bell tower contains the bells from the original church building of each of the three parishes. The masonry walls consist of “optimum series” 16” x 24” masonry split face units with a chamfered sill at 2”-8”. Above the sill are 8” split face masonry units with a band of premier burnish masonry units. The optimum block and chamfered sills are also exposed inside. The majority of the inside walls are exposed split face masonry units, some of which are load-bearing masonry columns.
Excellence
Six Points East Condominiums
Surrounded by neighborhoods and streetscapes, the Six Points East Condominiums portray a pedestrian scale and appropriate proportion with the use of concrete brick, tumbled concrete masonry and full-face split masonry units. The four story complete houses a sub-grade parking level for 82 cars stalls. The first floor offers mixed-use spaces for retail, office and restaurants. Above this are three floors comprised of 42 condors including six penthouses. In addition, the facility features two courtyards with a pass-through lobby. Chosen for their economy, and the large selection of available colors and textures, concrete brick and tumbled concrete masonry units offer an excellent canvas on which to apply differing masonry units that compliment each other. From the street, the masonry breaks larger volumes into smaller ones and brings the building down to a pedestrian scale that meshes with the surrounding neighborhood.
